"Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist protest punk rock and performance art group formed in 2011. Known for their provocative guerilla performances in unusual public locations, which are edited into music videos and posted on the Internet, the collective's lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin whom they regard as a dictator. The band has had varying members and usually about 11 women stage their performances anonymously wearing brightly colored balaclavas. In early 2012, three of the members were arrested and convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred," receiving two years imprisonment following a performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour."
